Irish Peatland Society
Peatland Study Trip 2023

October 2023
What lies within the peat: history, heritage and carbon stocks
About
The Irish Peatland Society is organising a series of field trips over two days on 10th and 11th October 2023 to explore the history, heritage and carbon stock contained within the peat of midland Irish peatlands.
Starting and finishing in Tullamore, Co. Offaly, the programme includes visits to five peatland and peatland-related sites.
The event will include the prehistoric Iron Age oak trackway on peatland at Corlea in Co. Longford; the Celtic Roots bog oak studio in Co. Westmeath; a practical demonstration of how to calculate the carbon stocks present in bog peat from a peat core taken on site at Clonydonnin Bog Co. Westmeath; a visit to Lemanaghan Bog in Co. Offaly, said to be the location of the highest density of peatland archaeological sites in the world; and a trip to Mongan Bog (also Co. Offaly) that is one of the most intact midland raised bogs in Ireland and is included in the internationally renowned Clonmacnoise Heritage Zone.
